IRENE (RUSSELL) MEADES

Irene (Russell) Meades, 90, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008 with her daughter by her side. She is now whole in body and mind in the presence of her Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the past several years, Irene resided at Rainycrest Long-Term Care in Fort Frances.

She was born Irene Hunt on April 6, 1918 in Winnipeg, Man. Her family moved to the Fort Frances area in the 1920s.

Irene was known for her strong work ethic and business savvy. She began her career with Rusty Myers Flying Service in 1956 as a short-order cook at the luncheon counter. She worked her way up to secretary, office manager, and finally owner/operator.

During this time, she proudly promoted tourism in Northwestern Ontario.

In 1990, Irene sold the business and retired.

Irene had a heart full of compassion and after retirement found her true calling—volunteerism. She served countless hours on the Rainycrest auxiliary, hospital auxiliary, and the Arthritis Foundation. She always could be counted on to lend a helping hand.

Irene loved to read and knit, and could do both at the same time. No matter where she was, her knitting project was always close by. Family members were blessed over the years with her beautiful creations that will be cherished for years to come.

She was predeceased by her parents, William and Mabel (Dirkin) Hunt; daughter, Elizabeth Mae (Russell) Peterson; grandsons, Jamie and Randy Russell; and brothers, Gordon and Brian Hunt.

She is survived, and will be deeply missed, by her sons, Bill (Helen Bodnerchuk) Russell of Bradenton, Fla. and Allan (Mary Hartje) Russell of Andover, Mn., and daughter, Lori (Jim) Lyman of International Falls, Mn.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy Sutton of Thunder Bay, Ont.

A celebration of Irene’s life will be held Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 at 10 a.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church in Fort Frances. Rev. Georgina Connor will officiate, followed by interment in Fort Frances Cemetery.

There will be no visitation.

The honourary pallbearers will be Jim Lyman, Jerad Kostiuk, Jason Peterson, Richard Russell, Michael Russell, and Tom Spiros.

In memoriam donations would be preferred to Rainycrest Long-Term Care—East Wing in Fort Frances, Ont. or KBHW-Psalm 99.5 Radio in International Falls, Mn. c/o Green Funeral Home, P.O. Box 427, Fort Frances, Ont., P9A 3M8.
