Irene Landry, of Barwick, Ont., passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Friday, June 13, 2014 at the Emo Health Centre in Emo, Ont. at the age of 90.

Irene was born Sept. 24, 1923 in Nelles Township, Ont. to Joseph and Mary Ann Gouliquer.

She was united in marriage to Hector Landry on Nov. 20, 1939.

Irene had a strong work ethic and was very independent. She learned this very early in life, looking after her two boys, Tom and Peter, while her husband served overseas from 1942 until the end of the war.

She was never afraid work and would tackle any job, no matter how difficult to provide for her family.

In the earlier years, Irene and Hector and their young family would relocate to many communities following Hector’s work on construction. They resided in many places, including Arbor Vitae, Ont., Gimli, Man., Port Alberni, B.C., Kenora, Ont., Ear Falls, Ont., Dunblane, Sask., Devlin, Ont., and Minaki, Ont., to name a few, before finally settling in Barwick.

Irene also worked on numerous jobs, including as a school bus driver, milk truck driver, security guard and a bilingual translator for the South Bay Mine, an ambulance driver, and as a heavy-equipment operator of an Euclid earthmover in the Griffith Mine.

In addition to working out of the home, Irene always found time for a garden, canning and preserving her fruits, vegetables, and wild game. She also will be fondly remembered for her homemade quilts and her love for curling, hockey, and watching local baseball games.

Irene is survived by her children, Tom (Wendy Richards) Landry of Moose Jaw, Sask. and Peter (Joanne) Landry of Barwick, Ont.; grandchildren, Scott Landry (Patricia LaBar), Ricky Landry, Joan (John) Quint, Jason Landry (Farah Flinders), Joshua Landry, and Jessie Loveday; great-grandchildren, Johnny, Brian, Matt, Brianna, and Blaine; and great-great-granddaughter, Aleena.

She also is survived by her brothers, Hector Gouliquer, Lawrence (Olive) Gouliquer, and Gerald (Mary) Gouliquer; sister, Stella Huntley; sister-in-law, Georgette Gouliquer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Irene was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Mary Ann; husband, Hector (1987); son, Blaine (2011) and his wife, Linda (2003); grandson, Matt Landry (1989) and a great-grandchild, Dawna Quint; brothers Arthur (Madeline) Gouliquer, Peter (Mary) Gouliquer, Antoine “Tony” (Rose) Gouliquer, and Theo “Deedee” Gouliquer; sister-in-law, Irene Gouliquer; and brother-in-law, Frank Huntley.

Visitation was held Tuesday, June 17, 2014 from 7-9 p.m. at the Northridge Funeral Home in Emo, Ont.

Funeral services followed there Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 1 p.m., with Fr. Alan Albao officiating.

Interment will take place in Devlin Cemetery.
