Henricus (Harry) Albertus Antonius Pruys passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family, on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019 at the age of 94.
Harry was born Feb. 18, 1925 in Etten, Netherlands. He attended school strictly for boys until completion of grade eight. He then worked on the family farm to help support the family due to economic conditions.
After WWII, in 1947, Harry was drafted into the Dutch Army and went to Indonesia for just over two years to serve as a mechanic.
Upon returning to Holland in 1949, he started the immigration process to come to Canada.
He met Mechtilda (Til) Nyland in March 1950 and they became engaged shortly thereafter.
He immigrated to Canada in May 1950, and married Til on Sept. 1, 1951, at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances.
They lived briefly in Atikokan, before settling on the family farm in Devlin in 1953.
Harry farmed until 1966 and then went to work for the paper mill, first as a labourer and then obtained his pipefitter ticket shortly thereafter, retiring in 1987. He was well-respected by his coworkers for his skill at his trade.
He moved into Rainycrest in the fall of 2016.
Harry was predeceased by his loving, wife, Til; his parents, as well as his six siblings.
He will be missed by his children, Mary (Keith), John (Dianne), Tony (Mary), Ed (Bonnie), Paul (Lori), Ron (Janice), Matty (Eddie), and Liz (Pete); 18 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Annie and Miep; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Harry enjoyed hunting and fishing, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
A funeral mass service will be held at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Fort Frances on Friday, Oct. 4, 2019 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church.
Honourary pallbearers will be his loving grandchildren.
