It is with great sadness that the family of Guenther Leopold Rittau announces his passing on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017 at La Verendrye Hospital in Fort Frances Ont.

Guenther was born on Aug. 29, 1932 to Cacelia and Ludwig Rittau in Stillersfeld, Germany. He was united in marriage to Johanna Emilie Rittau on June 5, 1955 and they were fortunate enough to have been together to share their love, life, and family for 54 years.

With a dream of farming and raising their family in the country, Guenther and Johanna immigrated to Canada in 1957. At the beginning of their lives in Canada, Guenther worked in several different mines in Northwestern Ontario until they bought their first farm in Rainy River, Ont. in 1963.

Then in 1969, they settled down in Burriss, Ont., where they owned and operated a dairy farm until their retirement.

Guenther was a kind and humble man who loved his family and the country life, farming, gardening, fishing, and bird-watching while also trying his hand at beekeeping and operating a greenhouse in his earlier farming days.

During his retirement years, he spent many hours reading and watched with great delight the variety of birds that would visit his feeders. But nothing gave him more pleasure than spending time with his family and enjoying those wonderful home-cooked meals around the kitchen table.

Guenther is survived and sadly missed by his children, Ludger (Carla), Jeanette (Vic), Martin (Adrienne), Bernard (Pam), and Chris (Marilyn); grandchildren, Tiffany (Jon), Sebastien, Gabrielle, Emmeline, Madeline, Levi, Sarah, Caitlin, Annalise, Aaron, and James; and great-grandchildren, Sophia and Keniyah.

He also is survived by his sisters-in-law, Renate Rittau and Iris Rittau; brothers-in-law, Norbert Cizerle and Josef Vogele (Margitta); and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Johanna; his parents, Cacelia and Ludwig; all of his brothers and sisters; and his nephew, Daniel.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 8, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fort Frances.

To all friends and family, in honour of Guenther's memory, please take a quiet moment, reflect on his life, watch the birds, observe the sunrise or sunset, offer a prayer, and think of him as you remember him.

If so desired, in lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Foundation re: Tamarack House, 980 Oliver Rd., Thunder Bay, Ont., P7B 6V4.
