Gladys Dorothy Jonassen, 75, of Rainy River, Ont., passed away Wednesday, June 3, 1998 after a courageous battle with cancer at Riverside Health Care Facilities in Fort Frances.

She was born Jan. 24, 1923 in Rainy River to Phillip and Mella Roblin.

Gladys grew up in Rainy River District, and was united in marriage to John Jonassen on April 24 1939. They had two children, Stanley and Patricia. In 1943, they moved to Fort Frances, where Gladys had worked at various jobs, her last being a lab and x-ray technician at La Verendrye General Hospital, retiring for health reasons.

She enjoyed fishing, cooking, and bingo. She also enjoyed painting, and many family members display her work with pride. She loved knitting, keeping her family in mittens and slippers.

In 1996, she moved back to Rainy River, where she renewed old friendships.

Gladys was predeceased by her husband, John (Jan. 12, 1983). She also was predeceased by her mother, Mella, in 1958; her father, Phillip, in 1995; two brothers, Gordon in 1992 and Leslie in 1951; and a step-brother, Keith, in 1990.

She is survived by her son, Stanley (Bonnie); daughter, Patricia (Bob) Miller; grandchildren, Clay, Stacy, Cindy, Jamie, and Jason; and step-grandchildren, Jodi, Jennifer, and Tim, and Anna, Matthew, and Bonnie.

Also surviving are her step-mother, Mildred; sisters, Nora, Evelyn, Irene, and Phyllis; step-sisters, Arlene, Maxine, and Barbara (Jim); as well as aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Cremation has taken place in Thunder Bay, Ont.

A graveside service for family and friends will be held Saturday, June 13, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances, with Pastor Brian Keffer officiating.
