Fred Roald Clausen was born July 31, 1932 in Flensburg, Germany, to parents Oskar and Marie Clausen.
Fred passed away May 19, 2019.
The family (Oskar, Marie, Fred, and twin brothers, Herbert and Robert) lived in Flensburg. They were there during those difficult war years, Fred compelled to go off to another country, Austria, in uniform, to boot camp at age nine.
In his early years, Fred's father being away in the war, Fred assumed responsibility for his family. He was an extremely diligent, hard worker. While there, at age 14, Fred made his choice to follow Jesus and was faithful to that commitment to the very end of his life, finding much joy in doing so.
The family left Germany, emigrating to Camrose, Alta., Canada in 1951 where Fred worked as a house painter, supporting the Clausen family as they adjusted to their new homeland.
Eventually the Clausen family moved to Vernon, B.C. where he met Lois Dunnett of Kelowna, B.C. They were married in June 1955. Soon after, they followed Lois' family to California for a few years, where son, Mark, was born.
In 1959, they returned to Vernon where Fred worked as an auto body mechanic for a local car dealership and Lois was an elementary school teacher. Both daughter, Carol Lyn, and son, Michael, were born in Vernon during this time.
After several cold winters in Vernon, they moved back to California, where he lived for the next 39 years until 2001. Fred lived in a total of 14 places, 10 of which were in California.
He met Ruth Mose of Fort Frances and they were married Sept. 18, 2001. They bought a small home on Rainy Lake, remodelled, landscaped, and enjoyed living there at the lake until he passed away.
Everyone Fred was in contact with remembers him as a very kind, loving man, having a great sense of humour, always thinking of others. In his last days in hospital, Fred was still wanting to share even his food trays with anyone who visited.
He was predeceased by his parents, Oskar and Marie Clausen; first wife, Lois Clausen; brothers, Robert of Duncan, B.C. and Herbert of Red Bluff, Cal.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Clausen, of Fort Frances, Ont.; son, Mark, (Debra) of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., daughter, Carol Lyn of Morgan Hill, Calif.; son, Michael (Lesa) of Turlock, Calif.; grandchildren, Stefan of Encinitas, Calif., Matthew of Mammoth Lakes, Tessa Jaime (Joshua) of Carlsbad, Calif., Samuel (Alex) of Turlock (great-grandkids Amelia and Finnick), Casey Heitzke (Mike) of Nashville, Tenn, (great-grandkids Charlie and Gunnar), and Chloe Lusher (Nathan) of Turlock, (great-grandchild James).
