It is with great sadness that the family of Francesca Marinaro announces her passing, with family by her side, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018 at the Atikokan General Hospital in Atikokan, Ont.
Francesca was born on Sept. 25, 1931 in Grimaldi, Italy to Pasquale and Teresa Abate.
She grew up in Italy; she then travelled from Naples, Italy to Canada on the ship, Olympica, landing in Halifax on April 27, 1956. From there, she travelled by train to Thunder Bay, Ont., where her brother, Joe, picked her up.
She spent two years in Thunder Bay, working as a seamstress, sewing post office bags and tents.
She was united in marriage to Evaristo (Antonio) Marinaro on April 27, 1957. She and Antonio moved to Atikokan in 1958, where she worked at the Radisson Hotel for 12-and-a-half years and then the White Otter Inn for seven-and-a-half years. She retired in 1984.
Francesca was a long-time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Women's League.
She was predeceased by her father, Pasquale; mother, Teresa, in 1993; and sister, Maria Malito, in 2005.
She is survived by her husband, Evaristo (Antonio); brother, Joe Abate; son, Antonio (wife, Sarah); grandchildren, Francesca Perry (Shaun), Michael Thomas, Heidi Cahill (Johnny), Tiffany Veldhuisen (Andrew), and Antonio (TJ) Marinaro; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces, including Francesca Matiowsky, with whom she had a special relationship.
A memorial mass was held on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Atikokan.
