Egil ‘Ed’ Sletmoen

Egil “Ed” Sletmoen of Rainycrest Home for the Aged, Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at his residence Wednesday, March 18, 1998 in his 92nd year.

Ed was born in Stange, Norway on April 11, 1906 to Johannes and Johanne Lysbakken. He was raised and educated in Norway, where he learned his trade as a carpenter.

In 1926, he immigrated to Canada with his brother, Ole, and settled in Rainy River District at McInnes Creek. He worked on Lake of the Woods as a carpenter, where he met Ethel Johnson, whom he married Nov. 17, 1934.

For a time during World War II, he and Ethel lived in Fort Frances, later returning to McInnes Creek.

Over the years, he became a well-known carpenter, especially in the west end of the district. Some of the projects he was most proud of included the log cabins he built at Cedar Island, The Ark houseboat and Helliar’s Resort at Nestor Falls, the J.A. Mathieu Estate, the Community Centre in Rainy River, and the Norlund Chapel in Emo.

He also worked on the McInnes Creek Chapel, and built many private homes and cabins throughout the area.

He was a member of the Sons of Norway Lodge in Roseau, Mn.

Ed enjoyed visiting with family, friends, and neighbours, and will long be remembered for his great sense of humour which he never lost. He was soft-spoken, a kind and gentle man, whose kindness and generosity benefitted many, and he was most appreciative of any kindness rendered him by others. He returned to Norway several times to visit his relatives.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel, on June 21, 1992; five brothers, Ole (Margaret) and Jorge of Canada, Peder, Yngvar, and Peder J. of Norway; five sisters, Mattea, Jenny, Jorgine, Karin, and Ragnhild of Norway; and nephew, Ivar Sletmoen in Canada.

Ed is survived by his sister, Ragna Aamat (Oddvar); and numerous nieces and nephews in Norway. In Canada, he is survived by nephews, Edwin Sletmoen (Sybil), Robert Sletmoen (Linda), Ronald Johanson (Barb), of Fort Frances, Ont., and John Anderson (Diane), Glenn Anderson (Peggy) of Bergland, Ont.; nieces, Ellen Gaudry (Darryl) of Selkirk, Man., Tanya Daoust (John) of Bergland, Ont., and Judy Kingerski (Don) of Winnipeg, Man.; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Anderson (Art), of Bergland, Ont.; and Rose Johnson of Rainy River, Ont.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 21, 1998 at 2 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church in Rainy River, Ont. Pastor Robert Ek officiated, with interment in McInnes Creek Cemetery in Dawson Township, Ont.
