DONNA JEAN ROWELL

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, nana, and great-nana, Donna Jean Rowell (nee Scott), on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018.

Donna was born on April 13, 1938 in Miscampbell, Ont. In the 1950s, Donna and her husband, Jack, moved to Atikokan, Ont., then Gilbert Lake, where they built the home they would raise their family in and live for the rest of their lives.

Throughout her life, Donna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, and best can be described as a nurturer of all people and things.

Family, friends, and neighbours alike all fondly remember Donna for always having the coffee on, a meal and dessert prepared, and a listening ear and smile for anyone who popped over to visit. She was a compassionate, dedicated, and genuine friend to all who walked through her door.

The many children who grew up in the Gilbert Lake area over the past more than 50 years also remember Donna as their “Neighbourhood Nana,” as she patched up and loved each child as her own.

When Donna wasn't entertaining or tending to others, she loved nurturing animals and her garden. She had an amazing way in both her garden and kitchen of creating the most delicious meals and canned food.

Her artistic flare also shone through everything she did; to Donna, it was not enough to to be a welcoming and generous host, she revelled in the creativity and artistry of presentation.

Donna dedicated her entire life to those around her, ensuring that we were well looked after, happy, and loved. She has imprinted the hearts of everyone she met and we will miss her more than words can express.

She leaves behind her children, John Rowell, Gwen Campbell (nee Rowell), and Shawn (Laurie) Rowell; grandchildren, Sarah Campbell (Scott Jonassen), John Ray Rowell, Luke Allen, and Michael Rowell; and great-grandchildren, Paisley Campbell-Jonassen and Blythe Campbell-Jonassen.

Also surviving are her sisters and brothers, Twila Kitowski, Charles (Vie) Scott, Ted (Verla) Scott, Janet Ireton, Betty Hoogendoorn, Joan Eikre, and Marge (Harold) Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews across Canada and the United States.

Donna was predeceased by her husband, Jack Rowell; son, Doug Rowell; parents, Ethel and William Scott; sister, Patricia Scott; and brother, “Sonny” Bill Scott.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 14, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the Atikokan Community Fellowship Centre.

In lieu of flowers, in memoriam donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.
