Sadly, the family announces the passing of Blanche Olga Bernier (nee Olinyk), 98, of Rainy River, Ont., on Thursday, June 21, 2018.
A funeral mass will be held Friday, July 6, 2018 at 11 a.m. at our Lady of Good Counsel in Rainy River, with Fr. Thomas officiating.
Parish prayers will be offered one hour prior to mass.
Interment to follow immediately at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Rainy River.
Blanche was born in Rainy River on June 15, 1920 to John and Effie Olinyk and was the youngest of seven children. She had one sister, Mary (Marmus), and five brothers, Charles O'Laney, Adam Olinyk , Stanley O'Laney, Clarence Olinyk, and Michael Olinyk.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; all her siblings; daughter, Vicky; son-in-law, Denis; and daughter-in-law, Gail.
She was united in marriage to George Bernier and they were blessed with three children, Donald, Victoria, and Nadeen (Deany).
George and Blanche raised their three children and operated an Esso oil business in Rainy River and then further operated it in Winnipeg, Man. Blanche was very proud of the fact that she was recognized by Imperial Oil Ltd. as a Commission Agent.
In the early 1960s, they built and operated the Border Motel in Rainy River.
Blanche loved curling and cooking. Anyone who was lucky enough to be invited to her home will remember her homemade perogies and cabbage rolls. In the last few years, she gave lots of tips to her daughter and granddaughters when they tried hard to duplicate her recipes.
Blanche is survived by her son, Don, and daughter, Deany (Dennis); 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
