Junior spikers leaning on experience

Category:

Having experience on a team always is a good thing—and it's something the Muskie junior boys' volleyball squad is stocked up on this season.

Ashton Cousineau, Declan Webb, Jaxon Gartzke, Joseph Hardy, Peyton Avis, Tristan Yerxa, and Zakary Kellar all were selected to the Region 1 14U boys' volleyball team at the Ontario Summer Games in London, Ont. in August and Muskie head coach Terry McMahon believes that experience will go a long way in helping out the black-and-gold in NorWOSSA play.

“We have seven athletes that competed in the Ontario Summer Games this past summer [and] in 10 days of high-performance training and competition there, they probably got as much—or more—experience than in an entire season of high school volleyball,” he reasoned.

“Our team is coming together great so far," McMahon added. ”The team was picked and we had our first team practice today [Monday].

“We figured out our positions and can proceed to learning our systems and playing some volleyball.”

Making up the rest of the junior squad are Christian Armstrong, Jaden Cooper, Trent Hunter, Brandon Croswell, Josh McGinnis, and D.J. Payne.

McMahon said each member of his squad has stood out in their own way so far.

“Josh McGinnis is a super consistent passer and will give us lots of power on our left side,” he enthused.

"And all of our rookies are very athletic and are catching on to things fast.

“The main things we will be working on will be serve and serve receive, and our decision-making,” McMahon noted.

“Then we will move onto defence and attacking from there.”

McMahon added he has high expectations for his squad this season and is excited to see how they'll compete.

“Expectations are always high, not necessarily to win but to play our best game," he remarked. ”Not to play up or down to anyone.

"It's a great group of athletes so I'm excited to see what we can do.

“I want our defence to be disciplined," McMahon added. "And I want our offence to be fast and aggressive.”

The Muskies kick off the NorWOSSA regular season here next Thursday (Sept. 20) against the Dryden Eagles before heading to Kenora on Sept. 21-22 to play in an tournament.
