Quick preparation key for senior spikers

Category:

With the NorWOSSA regular-season opener rapidly approaching, the Muskie senior boys' volleyball team knows it has little time to get ready.

The Muskies will host the Dryden Eagles next Thursday (Sept. 20) and with that in mind, head coach John Gibson noted his squad will be looking to come together as quickly as possible.

“We are starting a week later than normal [due to school starting after Labour Day this year] so it's a little too early to tell,” he said about how the team is coming together so far.

But Gibson already has noticed who some of his key players will be this season.

“We have a great group of returning players and a strong cohort of juniors moving up to senior,” he enthused.

“Ben Smith has stood out for me as a returning Grade 12 student and Caleb Allan is a very promising Grade 11 player.”

Gibson said the first priority is getting back to good technical form.

“And then we need to focus on systems,” he remarked.

Gibson's expectations for the black-and-gold are high this season, and believes he has the right mix of players to go deep into the season.

“I believe that we have the potential to win NWOSSAA this year,” he said.

“But we won't know what we are up against until we compete against the other schools in our area at the Kenora Invitational Tournament on Sept. 21-22,” he added.

In terms of systems, Gibson noted the Muskies will start out the season with a 5-1 serve/receive rotation on the court.
