Choose your 'Hometown Hero'

Category:

Gillons' Insurance is encouraging residents to come down and give a shout out to your “Hometown Hero.”

From now until the middle of September, nominations will be accepted at any one of Gillons' 11 locations, including here in Fort Frances, and funds raised will go towards various Northwestern Ontario foundations.

Nominations are offered for $2, $5, or $10.

Those who submit a nomination are asked to write down the name, who are they are, and why they were chosen on a post-it note that will be provided.

All of the names of the “Hometown Heroes” nominations will be displayed near the front desk of each Gillons' location.

“Hometown Heroes” come in all shapes and sizes, and could be anyone in the community—rom a barista or teacher to a charity or organization or just a close friend or co-worker.

Everyone might have a different idea of what makes a hero and it can be one of many things, including an act of kindness, a life-changing gesture, or just seeing someone smile every day.

Each of the foundations focus on the development and health of children.

The George Jeffrey Children's Foundation, for instance, provides a wide range of programs and services for babies, children, and youth in Thunder Bay and throughout Northwestern Ontario that live with physical, developmental, and social needs.

PROkids, also out of Thunder Bay, assists families with placement of children in community sports, arts, and cultural activites.

The Firefly Foundation's mission is to continue to raise funds to support research and develop programs to prolong brain health, encouraging young people to “appreciate, undertand, and take care of their brains thoughout their lifetime.”

Laura Wiebe of Gillons' here said the “Hometown Hero” campaign is not about recognizing just one person. It's to recognize all of those who do little things that make a big difference.

“We're big supporters of our Northwestern Ontario communities, and we think the people that make up our community and do great things deserve a shout out,” she reasoned.
