'Pop Up Playground' event planned again

Category:

The United Native Friendship Centre here is offering fun activities for kids and their families at the next “Pop Up Playground” event slated for next Thursday (Aug. 16) at the Legion Park here.

Running from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., families can enjoy fun games, bubbles, painting activities, crafts, and refreshments provided by the UNFC.

Organizer Katie Eide told the Times they plan to take attendees on a nature walk, where they will collect sticks and supplies to craft homemade paint brushes.

The brushes then will be used for a painting activity, in which children create something they can take home with them afterwards.

Two “Pop Up Playgrounds” were held last year near two local housing projects to help bring services to low-income families.

“That's why we started,” Eide said.

Now she and the UNFC would like to also host the events in areas that are very visible to the community to encourage participation from both native and non-native families.

“Part of the friendship centre's mission statement is to bridge the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous people,” Eide explained.

She's hoping the event will be able to better connect the community and foster positive relationships.

“We are doing this to help families create connections with their children and to help their children make a connection to the community,” Eide remarked.

“Within those connections is where children truly learn,” she stressed.

Eide is happy to be holding the next “Pop Up Playground” in an open area such as the Legion Park.

“It's a nice space," she enthused. "There's a lot of trees and it's easy for the kids to go run around.”

The UNFC also noted the Fort Frances Bear Clan Patrol would be doing a “safety sweep” of the park prior to the event.

Eide would like to encourage all families in the area to come out, and also urges anyone in the area in need of the UNFC's services to reach out.

“We're always here if someone needs a helping hand and our doors are always open,” she smiled.
