Rickford defends 'pause'

Category:

Earlier this month, the Ontario government announced the curriculum modernization summer writing sessions were being cancelled.

The modernization process was aimed at including First Nation, Métis, and Inuit partners while developing the new curriculum, which was one of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

Local MPP Greg Rickford said these sessions are not cancelled indefinitely but rather suspended temporarily due to budgeting concerns.

“We hit a pause button on this for the simple reason that we wanted to ensure that how these forums were taking place, and where they were taking place, were done with reasonable cost considerations,” he said Friday in an conference call with the Times.

“None of this curriculum is off the table," Rickford stressed. ”In fact, I worked and spoke with the minister of education who assured me that we would be revisiting this in short order.

“The principals of truth and reconciliation will be honoured and respected by this government and delivered, more importantly, in a real in concrete way,” he pledged.

Moving forward, Rickford said important indigenous content will not be left out of the new curriculum.

“We'll make sure the right partners participate in this so that this kind of important information makes its way into the curriculum,” he remarked.

“There's nothing stopping there.”
