Caliper Lake blaze among five new fires

Category:

Five new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday afternoon.

Fort Frances Fire #22, located near Caliper Lake, was listed as “not under control” at 0.5 hectares in size at last report.

Dryden Fire #24, located near Basket Lake, also was listed as “not under control” at 0.5 hectares.

The other three new fires were located in Red Lake District.

There currently are 77 active fires in the region, 65 of which are listed as either “under observation," "being held," or "under control.”

Kenora Fire #71 remains at 9,173 hectares in size. It received six mm of rain overnight, which reduced fire behaviour.

Air quality also is improving in the area around the fire.

Some 140 firefighters have been committed to this fire.

Heavy bucket helicopters continue supporting crews consolidating lines on the fire. Crews also continue to maintain sprinkler systems on structures in the vicinity of the fire.

Aerial ignition was used to bring portions of the fire to natural boundaries.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is reminding the public of an Emergency Area Order for the area around Kenora Fire #71 to ensure public safety.

As a result, the order restricts travel on Werner Lake Road, as well as Crown land use and travel within the boundaries of the EAO.

The forest fire hazard currently is “low" to "moderate" in the western portions of the region, and "moderate" to "high” in the eastern portions.
