Eight new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday afternoon.
Three blazes in Nipigon District make up a cluster of new lightning-caused fires about 45 km south of the First Nation community of Webequie.
These fires were listed as “under observation.”
About 70 km to the south, another cluster of lightning-caused fires, discovered on Tuesday evening, also were “under observation.”
Two fires each also were reported in the Red Lake and Sioux Lookout districts, with all four listed as “not under control” at last report.
FireRangers working on Nipigon Fire #15, a day-old, two-hectare blaze near Cathy Lake and the north shore community of Pays Plat, received some assistance from a helicopter bucketing water onto the steep terrain.
There currently are 32 active fires in the region, 26 of which are listed as either “under control," "being held," or "under observation.”
Wet weather is reducing the forest hazard in Kenora District and the southern portion of the Red Lake districts to “low.”
A “moderate” hazard exists in the Fort Frances, Dryden, and Thunder Bay districts.
A “high” hazard exists in the north shore region and areas of the far north.
