Norbert Bragg was presented with the Township of La Vallee's annual “Senior of the Year” award at his residence last Monday (May 14).
Reeve Ken McKinnon and Couns. Lucille MacDonald, Irwin Hughes, and Dennis Allan presented him with his plaque.
This award always has been presented at the annual municipal Christmas party in December. But due to his failing health conditions, it was decided to present him with the award at this time.
Norbert is a well-known figure known for his infectious yet mischievous smile throughout the entire Rainy River District.
His volunteerism stretches throughout the district. He has donated and kept the tank at Box Alder Cemetery filled with water every spring.
He also produced many a smile to children's faces as he brought his horse team and sleigh to the La Vallee Christmas party for many, many years.
However, it's likely Nobert's most cherished memories of thousands of adults today are his many years as their bus driver.
Whether their daily bus driver or on a school trip, Norbert left a mark on many throughout his busing career.
Norbert travelled not only to every school throughout the district, he also travelled to B.C., Montreal, Toronto, and into the U.S.
Norbert recently shared with me that after the tragic crash involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team that one of his former passengers (now an adult) phoned him and shared his gratitude over how he was was so grateful for Norbert being his bus driver.
He logged more than one million miles over the years.
I'm sure there are many more volunteer events Norbert has been involved in that I'm forgetting.
It was obvious at his 85th birthday that recently was celebrated that Norbert is well-known and respected throughout the district and further.
Our community would like to congratulate Norbert on this well-deserved award.
