Illegal deer hunt costly

Category:

A Dryden-area man has been fined $2,000 for hunting offences.

Michael Bernier of Vermilion Bay pleaded guilty and was fined $1,000 for entering private property without permission for the purpose of hunting, and $1,000 for failing to immediately attach his game seal to a deer he had harvested.

He also was given a one-year hunting suspension.

Court heard that on Nov. 7, Bernier was hunting in the north Waldhof area and shot a white-tailed deer.

An investigation by conservation officers revealed Bernier shot the deer once and subsequently followed it onto private property, where he did not have permission to hunt.

He then shot it a second time, killing it. The deer then was loaded into the back of Bernier's truck, transported, and hung without a game seal.

The deer meat was seized during the investigation and donated locally.

Justice of the Peace Daisy Hoppe heard the case April 5 in Dryden.
