One new fire was reported in Sioux Lookout District late Wednesday evening.
Reported as one tree on fire as the result of a lightning strike, the 0.1-hectare blaze was located about 40 km northwest of Savant Lake.
Meanwhile, one fire was declared “out” in Nipigon District, leaving the total number of active fires in the region at 10, including two in Nipigon District, three in Kenora District, two in Sioux Lookout District, and three in Thunder Bay District.
Most of these remaining fires are located in areas that will benefit from fire renewal and are not threatening values. They will be monitored on a regular basis until they go out.
Most of the blazes are not showing active burning at this time, although reconnaissance over the fires does show some smouldering activity.
The Ministry of Natural Resources reminds residents to always use caution with outdoor fires and follow safe burning guidelines.
Remember to choose a safe site, keep your fire small, and never leave it unattended. And if it’s windy, don’t burn.
As well, ensure the fire is put dead out before leaving the site.
