Sabres bolster defence corps

Category:

The Fort Frances Jr. Sabres have shored up some holes on defence in preparation for their second SIJHL season.

Head coach Wayne Strachan announced the team has acquired defencemen Kenny Carpenter and Darren Ezelyk from the Quesnel Millionaires of the British Columbia Hockey League in exchange for future considerations.

Both players, born in 1989, played most of last season with the Millionaires. Ezelyk picked up seven points in 44 games while Carpenter had five assists to go along with 126 minutes in penalties in 46 games.

In related news, Taylor Jorgenson has left the Sabres for personal reasons due to a conflicting work schedule through the winter. And Ryan Widmar has since been released to make room for the newly-signed Carson Dubchak.

“[Widmar] was a forward signed in the off-season for offensive abilities, but with the players we had in camp and the addition of Carson Dubchak from Kenora, he just fell out of our depth chart,” Strachan explained.

Dubchak spent last season with the Midget ‘AAA’ Kenora Thistles, tallying 14 points in 15 games.

“Carson is a young player with a great future,” Strachan enthused. “He has a lot of offensive skills [and] once he adapts to the junior level of play, he will be a huge part of our team.”
