Fastball season drawing to a close

After beating Stratton 11-5 last night, the Emo Bulldogs are one game away from being crowned the Rainy River District Fastball League champs yet again.

“It was a close game until the bottom of the sixth inning when Shane Bliss hit a grand slam, which brought in enough runs to win the game,” noted Bulldog manager George Oltsher.

If Stratton would have won last night, they would have advanced to face the winner of Thursday night’s game between Emo and Pinewood next Tuesday.

Instead, Emo can capture the league title with a victory over Pinewood tomorrow night. But a loss and those two teams will go at it again next Tuesday night for all the marbles.

“If Pinewood wins, then they are both tied for one loss and they will be forced to play a tiebreaker next Tuesday,” said Olthsher.

Emo had finished the regular season atop the standings with a 15-2-1 record. Pinewood was a close second at 14-2-2 while Stratton ended up third at 12-4-2.

Sight and Sound was next at 9-9, followed by Big Grassy (7-10-1), Barwick (3-15), and Big Island (1-16-1).

Don Copenace is leading the home run race with eight so far this season, followed by Murray Armstrong (seven) and Brent Tookenay (six).

Wareen Voth is the leading pitcher with an 11-1 record, followed by Armstrong (11-3) and John Desaulniers (9-2).

Olthsher said a wind-up banquet is slated Sept. 23, when trophies will be handed out and the league chooses its all-star players.
