I was infuriated by your front-page article (Oct. 2) concerning the charge of importing child pornography facing a local resident.
Your paper took the liberty to arrange police statements in such a manner that it would lead to the assumption that Mr. Anderson was the focus of a four-month investigation and that incriminating evidence was seized at his residence.
Does your anonymous “staff writer” know the answer to any of the following?
a). Was Mr. Anderson the focal point of a four-month investigation?
b). Was Mr. Anderson ever observed importing or trying to import child pornography?
c). Was Mr. Anderson ever knowingly in possession of any child pornography?
d). Has Mr. Anderson ever attempted to solicit child pornography?
If something is unknown, state that it is unknown! It’s called journalism, maybe you’ve heard of it. For example, “It is unknown whether Mr. Anderson was the target of the four-month investigation.” Or, “The content of the VHS video tapes is unknown at this time”
Or, “It is unknown if Mr. Anderson was aware of the content of an unopened video tape that was confiscated from his mailbox.” Get the idea?
Your brief, yet damaging, article answers none of the aforementioned questions yet implies volumes. I realize that you are in the business of selling papers but regardless of the attraction to sensational headlines, it is your duty to report the news objectively and responsibly.
Character assassination + small town = destroyed life!
Mr. Anderson has been one of my closest friends for more than 15 years. Speaking as a friend and the father of a three-year-old daughter, I can assure you that these despicable allegations are completely false.
I sincerely hope that at some point in the future, an intelligent jury determines the monetary amount that would serve as an adequate “apology” for the grief you’ve carelessly caused the entire Anderson family.
