Dental office welcomes new specialist

Dr. M. E. Kennedy and her staff could not be more pleased with the recent addition of dental specialist Dr. Maria Partida to their team.

A former resident of Mexico, Dr. Partida made the trip to Fort Frances two weeks ago to begin her new job and rebuild a life for her and her family in their new surroundings.

“I want to be here for a long time,” Dr. Partida said yesterday. “God willing, I hope to be here for seven to 10 years.

“My children were born in Canada and I decided that I wanted to give them the opportunities Canada had to offer,” she noted. “If they decide to go to Mexico when they are finished school, then that will be their choice.

“For now, though, I want them to live here so they can continue to experience Canada.”

Specializing in prosthodontics, Dr. Partida graduated from McGill University in Montreal.

“I wrote the Quebec boards and received my specialist’s certificate in Quebec,” she said. “I spent 10 years practicing in Quebec, with three of those years at the Montreal General Hospital.

“During that time, I specialized in restorative work like fillings, crowns, and partials,” she added. “I also do dentures and prosthesis work, as well as periodontal surgery.”

With one son away at university and the other attending high school here, Dr. Partida jumped at the chance of bringing her family to a small town.

“I had the chance to stay down in Toronto as I waited to hear back from Dr. Kennedy about the job,” she remarked. “I really do not like large cities and can’t see raising my family there.

“Since we have been here, my son has been very happy,” she continued. “Due to our having to move, he has lost a year of school and is attending grade 10.

“After his first day, he came home and told me how everyone treated him so nicely. It is a relief to know he was so welcome.”

Happy with the response she’s gotten from the community so far, Dr. Partida is looking forward to putting her skills to work at Dr. Kennedy’s office on Colonization Road West.

“These few weeks I have been here have been very good,” she noted. “I am very [pleased] with the opportunity that I have been given.

“Dr. Kennedy’s office is very good and has state-of-the-art equipment that I will be able to use,” she added. “I am really looking forward to getting the chance to practice here and I feel I am going to like it a lot.”
