New trophy, medals now up for grabs
In addition to the traditional “bragging rights,” the take-home swag for this year’s Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival is truly spectacular!
Now that the festival is in its third year, and steadily growing, the organizing committee has decided its time the team trophy reflects this.
The little gold dragon trophy—so kindly donated by Nikki Baird at the festival’s inauguration—is being respectfully assigned other duties.
A magnificent replacement, designed by director Paul Pirie and fabricated with the assistance of Leon Gingrich of Gingrich Woodcraft Inc. in Devlin, is taking its place.
“Any team sponsor would be proud to bear the right to display this trophy in their place of business for the next year,” noted Pirie.
“And on top of that, all first-, second-, and third-place paddlers will take home a custom medal, as well,” he added.
The new trophy is big—with a beautifully-detailed bronze sculpture of a dragon encircling the feet of Qu Yuan, dragon boating’s legendary founder, on a dark walnut base.
“The neat thing is that the sculpture very nearly matches the painting on the front cover of the ‘Legend of the Dragon Boats’ book, which will accompany the trophy from year to year from now on,” said Pirie.
Worthwhile swag, indeed!
To compete for a chance at it, sign up at the Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce (274-5773).
Single paddlers are welcome–we’ll find you a team.
The third-annual Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival takes place this Saturday (Aug. 9) at 10 a.m. sharp at the Sorting Gap Marina.
