“Today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic . . .” is how the popular children’s song goes, and Andrea Avis of the Fort Frances Public Library is hoping to see a lot of children with their teddy bears at the annual Teddy Bear Picnic there this Friday.
“This picnic had been going on forever,” Avis said. “My goal for this event is to try and gear it toward three- to eight-year-olds.
“I have never wanted to just make it a picnic,” she noted. “Instead, we have a number of activities for the children to participate in. For me, it is about creating a fun time for the kids and giving them wonderful memories.”
Landing corporate sponsorship five years ago from Abitibi-Consolidated and Fun in the Sun, Avis has been able to bring in talented performers to entertain guests during the outdoor event.
“This year we have brought in Jake Chenier,” she noted.
“He is a Juno Award winner who recently released the CD, ‘Walking in the Sun.’
“We really like Jake because he has a real gentle feel with the kids.”
Providing cupcakes and juice boxes, activities, and music, Avis is hoping to be able to create an experience children will love.
“We are going to have a lot of really neat stuff for the kids to do,” she enthused. “We will have the teddy bear fortune-teller, and Dr. Spencer will make her return this year to care for those teddy bears who are in rough shape.”
Avis said they have many volunteers who help out each year and they are always a great support. “This is a very fun event and it seems to me that the parents have just as much fun as their children,” she remarked.
This year’s teddy bear picnic will take place in the large field behind the library from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Admission is $3 (teddy bears are free). Children also are reminded to bring along a sandwich and blanket.
