The community of Emo is getting behind Jack and June Winik by holding a benefit shower for the couple next Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Emo Legion.
The Winik’s home and their belongings were destroyed by a fire Feb. 16. Both of them were away from the house when the blaze started.
Janet Young, one of the organizers of the shower, said things will run on a "come and go" format.
"We’re setting it up so people can come and talk to Jack and June, have coffee and a dainty," she noted.
Young said they’re asking people to donate mostly household items, such as cook ware and linen, plus miscellaneous things like tools.
"Or if people prefer, there will be a box there for money donations," Young added. "Whatever they want to do."
An electrical short caused the blaze at the Winik’s home. June Winik was working at Donald Young School while her husband had just come into Emo.
A passing motorist reported seeing smoke coming out of the house.
The Emo and Devlin volunteer fire departments responded, as did a tanker truck from Chapple.
When the couple returned to the site at 11 p.m., they found no trace of the fire. But it flared up again around 1:30 a.m. and destroyed the remainder of the house.
