Jackson wins men’s bonspiel

Lorne Jackson won the 50th-annual Fort Frances men’s bonspiel Sunday afternoon, stealing one in the final end to eke out a 5-4 victory over Tim Nordin.

Jackson’s rink, which included Greg Bruce, Dennis DeGagne, and Derrick Jackson, went undefeated in the 48-team field, reeling off wins over Dick Armit (8-3) and Clyde Ditmars (5-4) on Friday, then against Kevin Busch (8-6) on Saturday afternoon.

Jackson then dumped Mark Stevens of Grand Rapids 9-4 on Sunday morning to reach the ‘A’-event final.

Meanwhile, Nordin’s rink beat Rick Wiedenhoeft (5-2), Everett Jackson (7-3), Ron Bridgeman (7-1), Dave Hughes (6-1), and John McLeod (7-3) to reach the final.

In ‘B’-event action, Scott Gobeil doubled Todd Cunningham of International Falls 8-4 in the final while Ron Martinuk edged Wayne Beacham 7-6 to win the ‘C’ event.

Blair Chitty (Red Lake) won the ‘D’-event by a flip of a coin over Dick Armit (Dryden).

Rob Sinclair, draw master for the bonspiel, said he was impressed with all of the help they received from various local businesses which donated prizes.

“Without the sponsors, the bonspiel wouldn’t be able to go at all,” said Sinclair. “I’d like to thank alll the sponsors who helped out.”
