Fort woman seeking Miss Canada crown

A dream Caroline Gagné has had since she was a little girl is about to come true as she prepares to head off to the Miss Canada International Pageant in Toronto in August.

Gagné will be representing Fort Frances at the pageant.

She said she came across information on the pageant by accident on the Internet while trying to get information on the Miss Hawaiian Tropic contest.

“I just got my official acceptance letter and everything,” Gagné said, noting she plans to head down Aug. 15, with the final pageant set to take place Friday, Aug. 21 at the Living Arts Centre in the Hammerson Theatre.

“We have to brink a token of the town,” she added, saying she would try to scare up some Town of Fort Frances pins.

Contestants will be judged on poise, intellect, personality, communication skills, community and charity work, and public speaking.

For the week she’s in Toronto, Gagné said she’ll have to go through several interviews with judges before the actual public part of the pageant.

Then there are the traditional evening wear, cocktail wear, and active wear parts of the competition on the night of the pageant itself, along with impromptu questions for the eight finalists.

“It’s just fun to be in there and meet girls from across the country,” Gagné said, noting MCI’s head office told her to expect about 40 contestants at this year’s pageant.

The cost for entering the pageant is $2,050. Gagné already has sent in her $300 deposit and has until Aug. 1 to raise the remaining $1,750. She’s hoping to find some sponsors to help ease the cost.

“I’ve got a couple of places but I don’t have any definite yeses yet,” she said.

Gagné also didn’t know if the pageant would be televised or not but as soon as she did know, she said “so would everyone else and their dog.”

“It’s just a thrill to go,” she enthused. “If I win it, great. If I don’t, I’m still going to have fun and enjoy it.”
