Wicket clerks at the Canada Post office here no longer need to rely on postage manuals and calculators to keep track of business now that computers have been installed at the service counter.
The Fort Frances office was one of just 500 out of 8,000 Canada Post outlets across the country to get on the computer bandwagon—an upgrade brought about by a steady flow of business.
“It’s one of the top 500 in all of Canada to [receive] computers. That’s based on revenue generated and the [customer traffic] in the office,” Trevor Kerr-Taylor, area retail manager for Canada Post, said Monday from his Dryden office.
“It brought us into the 21st century, and has given us a more professional front line,” he added.
Everything from correct postage, postal codes, insurance rates, delivery confirmation, and label printing will now be accessed through computerization.
“Every product you purchase, or even when you pick up a parcel, will be recorded through the computer,” Kerr-Taylor said. “It will be like a book of knowledge for our employees and given the opportunity, they will really enjoy it.
“And one of its main features, at least from a manager’s standpoint, is that [the computers] will keep track of inventory instead of us going in and counting it all by hand,” he stressed.
The Fort Frances office was one of five in Northwestern Ontario to computerize its customer services, with the others in Atikokan, Kenora, Dryden, and Sioux Lookout.
