Soccer, slo-pitch tourneys slated this weekend

Category:

Borderland Ball Blast '97, which features a men's soccer tournament and an adult mixed slo-pitch one, goes for the first time this weekend at the St. Francis Sports Field.

The three-day event is offering $3,000 in cash prizes altogether, and 10 free tickets per team for the social slated Saturday night at the curling club.

Slo-pitch organizers said they are offering free admission to the social instead of giving higher cash prizes to the top teams.

The slo-pitch tourney also will have a rule limiting each team to five home runs per game. After that, each ball hit over the fence will be counted as a single.

Organizers added there also will be umpires for all games so winning teams don't have to worry about having to supply them for the next game

Entry fee for the slo-pitch tourney is $185 per team while the soccer one cost $250.

A dozen teams teams already have registered for the slo-pitch tourney and six have committed for the soccer one. Organizers had said last week that eight teams were coming to town this weekend but two dropped out since then—leaving all five from the local Borderland league and one other from Dryden.

Schedules for both tournaments aren't expected to be set until tomorrow.

To kick off the weekend action, last year's Muskie girls' soccer team will play an exhibition game against an alumni squad Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the St. Francis pitch.
