Senior spikers swept in Dryden

Category:

The Muskie senior boys’ volleyball team stumbled yesterday afternoon in Dryden, dropping three straight games to the Eagles by scores of 15-8, 15-11 and 15-9.

With the three-game sweep, the Muskies have earned just two of six possible points so far this NorWOSSA season.

Head coach Rick Wiedenhoeft admitted he continues to be disappointed with his team’s effort, noting they again were guilty of committing too many “rookie” mistakes.

“It was pretty ugly. Again we were flat and we lacked emotion," said Wiedenhoeft. "We have to start playing with more intensity and our passing was terrible.”

Wiedenhoeft said the Muskies played well at the beginning of all three games, then faltered in allowing the Eagles to reel off consecutive points.

In fact, the senior spikers led Dryden 7-1 in the third game before allowing the Eagles to go on a 14-2 run and the sweep.

That collapse left Wiedenhoeft in a sour mood afterwards.

“Our passing was very bad, and we continue to be too laid back,” he stressed.

The seniors started the regular season on a better note here last Thursday, taking two of three points from Kenora. After dumping the Broncos 15-11 and 15-10, the Muskies fell 15-11 to close out the match.

Despite picking up the two points, Wiedenhoeft said his team was guilty of unforced errors and making too many mistakes.

But he did say middle hitter John Ottertail, setter Jason Jones and power hitter Chris Wiedenhoeft were impressive in the win.

Meanwhile, in junior boys’ volleyball action, the Muskies could manage just one win in three tries up in Dryden yesterday, taking the second game by a convincing 15-3 score.

But the black-and-gold opened were trounced 15-1 in the first game and dropped a 15-7 decision in the third one.

The juniors now have three points on the season after winning two of three games against Kenora here last Thursday.

They dropped the first game 15-5, then roared back to win the next two by scores of 15-8 and 15-12.
