Kelly Nielson’s Muskie curling rink went 1-2 at the NorWOSSA curling playdowns in Sioux Lookout this week to finish third, failing to claim one of two berths to the NWOSSAA finals next month.
The Grade 12 skip and her foursome, including third Amy Nielson, second Amber Sheloff, and lead Kate Bondett, opened round-robin play in the four-rink field Tuesday with a 9-2 win over the host Warriors.
But they lost 9-5 to Dryden that night, then dropped a 3-0 decision to Red Lake on Wednesday morning.
The Rams (3-0) won the gold medal, and will join second-place Dryden (2-1) at the NWOSSAA playdowns March 25-26 in Terrace Bay.
The two losses were Nielson’s first in her high school season. She had entered play with a 4-0 record in NorWOSSA qualifier action.
Meanwhile, the Rainy River Owls’ boys’ rink, skipped by Trevor Bonot, won NorWOSSA gold by going 3-1 in their five-team round-robin.
They lost their opener 6-2 to Kenora, but won their next three—9-5 over Atikokan, 6-4 over Dryden, and 8-3 against St. Thomas Aquinas (Kenora).
Bonot’s rink consisted of third Matt Nielson, second Kevin Nordberg, and lead Jason Seguin.
Dryden also advanced to NWOSSAA after finishing second. The Muskie boys’ team had failed to qualify for the NorWOSSA playdowns.
