A large portion of this year’s Northwestern Ontario ‘AAA’ PeeWee rep squad includes seven players from the local Knights of Columbus ‘AA’ team.
Preparing for the regional playdowns next weekend in Kenora are centres Tyler Miller and Eric Soucy, wingers Paul Dobransky and Brian White, and defencemen Danny Chapman, Tyson Kadikoff, and Kevin Plett.
Rounding out the 18-player team are players from Kenora, Dryden, Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, and Ignace.
“It was a nice surprise that a number of our kids made the team,” said KCs manager Bridget Dobransky.
Tryouts were held last December, but the team was put together just last month. They’ve been holding practices in Vermilion Bay since then.
They’ll play in a three-team round-robin format involving Thunder Bay East (Red Rock and Marathon areas) and the Thunder Bay ‘AAA’ Kings team, with the top two teams meeting in the final.
But both teams will advance to the all-Ontarios in Thunder Bay on April 4-7 against five other squads.
The team has played only one exhibition game this season, losing 3-1 to the Dryden Bantam ‘AA’ Apollos last weekend.
“Size is a major difference in Bantam and PeeWee,” said Stan Novak, head coach of the regional squad. “I’m happy with what we got out of it.”
Former KCs—and current Taggs Bantams—Justin Larson, Jared Catholique-Bruyere, and Andrew Perrault had qualified for the PeeWee ‘AAA’ rep team last season.
