Festival name still sought

The public is being asked to help name Borderland’s international summer festival at the beginning of July.
Community leaders from both sides of the border discussed possible names during a brainstorming session yesterday evening at the AmericInn in International Falls but decided to open up the process to everyone.

Between now and May 1, everyone is welcome to submit possible festival names to either the Fort Frances or International Falls Chambers of Commerce.
A running list of the submitted names will be posted on both websites.
Fort Chamber manager Annely Armstrong said the brainstorming of names for the festival started last year, with the result being “Peace Festival.”
But then they found out there are many events already going by that name.
“We want something that’s more unique to our area, that encompasses the whole week, and that we can expand on,” she explained.
Many people at last night’s meeting felt terms such as “peace,” “festival,” “border,” “freedom,” and “river” would be good to include in the name.
Multiple cross-border events are slated July 1-5, and these also should be considered in the name.
In addition to parades and fireworks in the respective communities on July 1 and 4, these events include the Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival on Canada Day and the cross-border tug-of-war, “Peace Pull,” on July 2.
A “Medical NAFTA” meeting—to discuss the potential for cross-border health services—is set for July 3.
The outdoor concert “Riverfest 2014” will close out the festivities on July 5.
Some of the names thrown around included International Peaceful Border Days, Boundary Waters Peace Festival, Rendez-Vous of the Nations, The Great Rainy River Rendez-Vous, I-Fort Peace Festival, Fort Falls Peace Festival, or Frances Falls Festival.
The public can submit their own name for the summer festival.
The submission should include your name, e-mail address, your suggested name for the festival, and a brief explanation of the reason for choosing that name.
The deadline for submissions is May 1.
