On Monday morning, I heard an unsettling news item on CBC Radio.
It was reported that a scientific study has found we can expect to have yearly infestations of forest tent caterpillars in Northwestern Ontario.
The reason given was that the insects and viruses that can keep the forest tent caterpillar in check require large tracts of forest cover to survive.
Our timber harvest practices have eliminated those large continuous forests.
It appears that we have crossed a threshold. If we have yearly infestations of forest tent caterpillars, how long will we have live poplar trees?
How should we respond to this news and more importantly, how will we?
