Meyer wins award

Every player wants to get better at the start of every season.
Mason Meyer took that concept to a new level.

The Fort Frances Lakers’ forward today was named the SIJHL’s most improved player after an outstanding season that saw him team up with linemates Lucas DeBenedet and Lyndon Lipinski to raise offensive havoc throughout the league.
In his second year with the team, the 19-year-old native of International Falls more than tripled his scoring totals from last season.
Meyer went from 27 points in 42 games in 2012-13 all the way up to 90 points in 55 games this campaign.
He finished third in the league in goals (40), as well as fourth in points (90) and assists (50).
Meyer also nabbed a first-team forward spot as part of the inaugural SIJHL all-star selections while also being named Pizza Hut player of the week a league-best three times.
Meyer beat out Zach Grzelewski (Thunder Bay North Stars) and Chris Sitco (Dryden Ice Dogs) for the award.
In other news, North Stars’ netminder Eric Mann was named Pizza Hut player of the week after making 39 saves to beat the Lakers 4-3 in Game 1 of their two-game, total-goal series Saturday in Thunder Bay.
Brent Aiken of the Lakers received consideration for the award after netting a pair of goals in Game 1.
The Lakers and Stars will go at it again in Game 2 this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Whoever win the series will choose its semi-final opponent from the two quarter-final survivors.
