Métis election wraps up tonight

Local Métis are being asked to come out to the Sunset Country Métis office and cast their ballot to elect a secretary-treasurer to the Provisional Council of the Métis Nation of Ontario (PCMNO).

One of the names on the ballot is local resident Brent Calder, who is vying against Tim Pile of Thunder Bay for the position.

Polls are open at the Sunset Country Métis office (426 Victoria Ave.) from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Polling clerks reported a good turnout at the advance poll Saturday, and expected an even better one today.

Elsewhere, MNO members are voting to name councillors for Regions 4 and Region 6.

In Region 4, William Jack Bouchard is running against Brent McHale while Vincent Shaun Redmond and Patricia Thibault are squaring off in Region 6.

Nine candidates were elected by acclamation late last month, including president Tony Belcourt, chair Gary Lipinski (of Fort Frances), and co-chair France Picotte, all of the MNO executive.

Lorraine Storrey was acclaimed as the regional councillor here (Region 1).

Others acclaimed were Guy Lefebvre (Region 3), Blair Pitfield (Region 5), Helen Bradley (Region 7), Brian Prevost (Region 8), and Valerie Stewart (Region 9).

There currently is no regional councillor here for either the Women of the Métis Nation of Ontario (WMNO) or the Métis Nation of Ontario Youth (MNOY).

A date and time for elections to fill these vacancies, and others, will be announced following completion of today’s election.
