Lakers extend win streak
The Fort Frances Lakers are not taking their foot off the gas pedal with the SIJHL playoffs just around the corner.
Lyndon Lipinski and Cody Wickstrom each had four-point outings, and Jordan Cartney made 19 saves, as the Lakers blanked the visiting English River Miners 8-0 on Friday to sweep the home-and-home series and earn their seventh-straight win.
The shutout was Cartney’s third of the season, which ties him for the league lead with English River’s Greg Harney.
It wasn’t Harney but P.D. Melgoza who absorbed the full impact of the Lakers’ assault Friday night.
Lucas DeBenedet scored short-handed for his league-leading 46th goal of the season.
Ryan McQueen, Bryce Lipinski, Miles Nolan, Hunter Leishman, and Cam Jackson netted the other Laker tallies.
In related news, Devin Tappenden, who shares goaltending duties with Cartney, received good news Saturday when he was named the Gongshow Gear Inc. performer-of-the-month for February.
The 19-year-old from Markham, Ont. posted a spotless 8-0 record for the month, along with a 1.88 GAA and .927 save percentage.
He’s now allowed two goals or less in his last six starts.
The Lakers (44-6-2-2) play their last road game of the regular season tonight against the last-place Wisconsin Wilderness (5-48) in Spooner.
Then they’ll host the Wilderness in their final tune-up for the playoffs this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.
