Snowshoe challenge issued

International Falls Mayor Shawn Mason has announced the annual “Sister Cities Snowshoe Challenge” will be held Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at Smokey Bear Park in conjunction with the “Blast at the Border” winter festival.

“I threw down the gauntlet and Mayor Roy [Avis] promptly picked it up!” Mayor Mason said.

“I really don’t expect much of a race this year,” Mayor Avis said in accepting the challenge. “We have been training hard and they look a little soft.”

“I think the annual ‘Sister Cities Snowshoe Challenge’ is one of the funniest events of the festival,” said Kallie Briggs, president of the International Falls Chamber of Commerce, which hosts “Blast at the Border.”

“People love it and look forward to it every year,” she added.

The event is free of charge and open to the public. A bonfire at the park begins at 6 p.m., with the race to follow at 7.

International Falls defeated Fort Frances in last year’s race.
