Sight & Sound opens playoffs versus Big Island

If last week’s game is any indication of things to come, tonight’s playoff game between Sight & Sound and Big Island at VanJura Stadium should be an eventful affair.

The first pitch is slated for 8 p.m.

Sight & Sound found themselves trailing 10-5 last Thursday night here, but a nine-run outburst in the fifth inning, followed by a six-run sixth, helped the home team a 20-12 win.

That victory left Sight & Sound with a 9-4-1 record on the regular season—good enough for third place in the Rainy River District Fastball League standings.

Big Island finished in sixth place with a 6-9 record.

Sight & Sound will be trying for its third-straight RRDFL crown when they open the double-knockout playoffs tonight, although players repeatedly said all the season that the “three-peat” has not been the team’s main focal point.

“That’s not really important to us,” said Paul Visser of Sight & Sound. “As long as we have fun, then that’s all that matters.”

Sight & Sound has been good offensively all season, but the team needs to improve their glove work.

“I wasn’t worried so much about getting the runs,” player/manager Derek McKinnon noted after last Thursday’s game. “But we were having such a poor game defensively that I was afraid that if they kept scoring that we wouldn’t get by them [Big Island].”

“I knew we could do it,” added Sight & Sound pitcher Harvey Flamand. “I knew we have the means, but it’s just a matter of sometimes getting the guys going and getting their heads in it.”

Red Gut Bay ousted Pinewood from the playoffs with a 9-6 win on Tuesday night in the eighth vs. ninth-place match-up, and now will face first-place and undefeated Rainy River tonight.

Other playoff action tonight pits second-place Barwick (11-5) versus seventh-place Sabaskong (5-10) and fourth-place Stratton (7-7-2) against fifth-place Big Grassy (6-8-1).

The next round will be played Tuesday night, with the league final slated for Aug. 30.
