Lakers win 10th-straight

It wasn’t as tight as their two most recent affairs at the Ice For Kids Arena, but the outcome was the same.
The Fort Frances Lakers made it 10-straight wins with a 5-2 triumph over the Dryden Ice Dogs here Saturday night.

After giving up a goal late in the first period, the Lakers used their speed to their advantage in the second stanza, scoring three-straight markers to take the lead for good.
Davis Smith and Jacob Nolan led the charge with a goal and an assist each while Hunter Leishman added a pair of helpers.
Alex Bruess, Jon Carlson, and Patrick Sofer also scored for the Lakers, who improved to 33-15-1-2 on the season.
At the other end of the ice, goalie Jameson Shortreed turned in a strong showing in his first start in a month, making 25 saves to earn his first victory since Jan. 18.
Derek McPhail and Mike Butler were the only Ice Dogs to beat Shortreed.
The Lakers and Ice Dogs will renew acquaintances once again Wednesday night in Dryden in what is looking more and more like a preview of the SIJHL semi-finals, which get underway in a couple of weeks.
The Lakers’ next home game is set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the Thunder Bay North Stars.
Those same two teams will face-off again here Saturday night before they head to Thunder Bay for a pair of games next Monday and Wednesday to wrap up the regular season.
In related news, Lakers’ goalie Talor Joseph this morning was named the SIJHL player-of-the-month for February.
Joseph, an 18-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta., was a perfect 7-0 last month with a 2.96 GAA.
