Fishing title hopes dashed

Category:

It appears Fort Frances’ attempt to be crowned the World Fishing Network’s “Ultimate Fishing Town” will meet a bitter end tomorrow afternoon.

After nearly two weeks of public voting, the first round of the contest will wrap up tomorrow (Sept. 1) at 4 p.m. local time.

As of press time this morning, Fort Frances was sitting in 15th spot in the Ontario region with just over 500 votes.

So barring a reprieve through one of four “wild card” slots selection by the WFN, the chase of the $25,000 grand prize, and a half-hour program produced by WFN, looks to be finished.

However, barring a spectacular comeback by a contending town, it appears Nestor Falls will advance to the final round of voting along with the runner-up from Ontario, the top two from both the Atlantic and West regions, and the four “wild cards.”

Nestor Falls had nearly 11,600 votes as of press time today while second-place Seeley’s Bay, another Cinderella story, was closing in on 8,000.

Nestor Falls will need all the help it can get in the next round, though, as it appears the West region will be represented by a pair of juggernauts.

Port Alberni, B.C. and Dauphin, Man. each boast well over 40,000 votes so far in the competition.

The final round of voting will run Sept. 7-28, with the winner being declared in early October.
