James Melvin DuCharme, 82, of Fort Frances, Ont., passed away Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013 at La Verendrye General Hospital in Fort Frances.

Jim was born Sept. 23, 1931 to George and Violet DuCharme.

He was raised in Sleeman and Rainy River, Ont., finishing high school in Rainy River. He then moved to Sioux Lookout, Ont. in 1950, joining the CNR.

There he met Mary Shankowsky and they were married in 1956. Together, they moved to Redditt, Ont. before settling in Fort Frances in 1960.

Jim retired from the CNR in Fort Frances in 1985.

After retirement, he worked as a carpenter helper for many years; he loved building things.

In 1982, the family bought a cabin and Jim spent every moment he could there; he loved the solitude and the nature.

He was a member of the Knox United Church and Royal Canadian Legion, and also was an avid curler after retirement.

He leaves behind his wife, Mary; sons, Christopher and wife, Doreen, Douglas and wife, Carol, and Gregory and wife, Tammy; grandchildren, John (Terri), Robert (Jennifer), Daniel DuCharme (fiancé Shawna), Justine (William) Vallis, and Dylan and Michael Lynn DuCharme; and great-grandchildren, Austin Fowler, Natalie DuCharme, and Keirsten and Peyten DuCharme.

Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Angus MacLellan; and sisters-in-law, Alice DuCharme and Elsie MacBeth.

Jim was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Maxwell and Lionel; sisters, Elaine, and Lorna; sisters-in-law, Barbara and Diane; and brother-in-law, Stanley MacBeth.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Br. #29 in Fort Frances, with Rev. Ralph Fluit officiating.

Cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date.

The honourary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, John DuCharme, Robert DuCharme, Justine Vallis, Dylan DuCharme, and Michael Lynn DuCharme.
