Junior rinks vying for crowns

Three curling rinks with local connections began their quests for provincial glory today as the Northern Ontario junior men’s and women’s provincial playdowns got underway in Kapuskasing and Sault Ste. Marie, respectively.
On the men’s side, Fort Frances native Isaac Keffer, who currently attends school in Thunder Bay, plays third on Kurtis Byrd’s rink from the Port Arthur Curling Club.

They opened play this afternoon against defending provincial champ Brennan Wark of Thunder Bay (the outcome wasn’t known as of press time).
Then following opening ceremonies this evening at the Kapuskasing Curling Club, the Byrd rink, which also features Joshua Szajewski at second and lead Mike Zsakai, will go up against Sudbury’s Tanner Horgan.
Meanwhile, Keffer’s older sister, Tirzah, led her rink Port Arthur rink into action this afternoon against Robin Beaudry (Sudbury) at the Soo Curlers Association.
The foursome then will meet Jenny Keetch (Thunder Bay) this evening.
Keffer, who finished third at last year’s playdowns, is joined by third Sheree Hinz, second Megan Westlund, and lead Rachel Camlin.
Also competing at the women’s playdowns is the Jessica Haw foursome from the Stratton Curling Club, which also features third Maria Vandenbrand, second Myan Miller, and lead Shauna Moen.
They opened play this afternoon against Krysta Burns (Sudbury), then will face Sarah-Anne Guay (Kapuskasing) this evening.
Both provincial playdowns will wrap up Sunday, with each winner earning berths to the national championships Jan. 31-Feb. 10 in Fort McMurray, Alta.
