With love and heavy hearts the children of Douglas Keith Gill announce his passing on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013 with his family by his side.

Doug was born Oct. 3, 1936 in Emo, Ont. to the late Frank and Jessie Gill.

Dad grew up in Barwick where as a young man he helped out with the family business.

After that, he worked for the CIBC bank then left to join his brothers in their family business with the R.A. Gill Limited which included the running of Doug’s Husky House in Fort Frances.

Dad was also known throughout the Rainy River District working at various outlets for the family business in Morson, Rainy River, Dryden, and Thunder Bay until his early retirement.

Dad loved reminiscing about the good times he had growing up in Barwick, especially the Black Hawk dances were he would dance the night away with all the girls.

Dad was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Fort Frances, Moose Lodge in International Falls, but one of his fondest memories was being a member of the F.A.R.T.S.

As a young man Dad was very active in the high school basketball and curling teams.

Dad’s greatest pleasure in life was being with family, whether it was a trip to the family camp, Wiley Point Lodge, a visit out to the farm in Stratton or a quick trip for a fun day with family and friends at Hopkins Bay.

Dad would travel anywhere at any time to visit with family and friends.

He was always very excited to spend time with his extended family at all the Gill family reunions.

Dad took great pride in his family by often keeping in touch with all his brothers, sister, nieces and nephews.

Dad had a special calendar that kept track of every one of his family member’s birthday and anniversary.

He took great pleasure that he was always the first person in the morning to call and wish you a happy birthday or anniversary.

Dad is survived by his children, Kim (Bruce) Whalen, Lorne, Cheryle (Ralph) Wolff, Brenda, Maureen (Don) Hayward, and Dale.

He will be deeply missed by all his grandchildren, Chris (Brittany), Ryan (Rachelle), Shawn Whalen, Trevor (Maryse), Eric (Sue), Katrina, Kristina, Billy Wolff, Tanner, Anthony Gill-Roisin, Brian (Kristin), Megan and Carter Hayward, and Shannon Dorward, and great-grandson, Taylor Hayward.

Dad is also survived by his brother, George Gill; close niece/sister Dolly Gill-Jackson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Jessie Gill; brothers Donny, Cal and Arnold; sisters, Avis Nault, Mona Ralko and Odell Ross; and several brother and sister in-laws and the mother of his children, Georgette Gill.

At Dad’s request, there will be no funeral service.

We would like to extend an invitation to family and friends to join us in a celebration of Dad’s life on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 1-3 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion in Fort Frances.

In lieu of flowers if friends so desire, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Room at Riverside Health Care, or the Fort Frances Community Chest.
