Jerome Cousineau, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 with his family by his side.

He was born Aug. 5, 1921 in Fort Frances, Ont. to Isadore and Blanche Cousineau. He was raised in Fort Frances.

Prior to World War II, he joined the Canadian Forestry Division and was sent to Scotland. When World War II was declared, the Forestry Division was made part of the Canadian Army Infantry and he served on the European front for five-and-a-half years.

During this time, he volunteered for the Tank Division and was served in Italy.

He was one of the last members of his unit and after the war ended, he returned to Fort Frances, working odd jobs and building houses for his family and friends until he gained full-time employment at the local mill.

He met and married Valeda DeGagne on June 14, 1947.

Jerome volunteered extensively with the Knights of Columbus and helping out at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church until his family of 13 was complete. Once his children arrived, he turned his attention to them and he and Valeda moved to Crozier and opened Cousineau’s Store.

He made Valeda and his children his life. He did everything for them. As his children grew and started families of their own, he doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He enjoyed fishing, road trips, and loved to garden. He retired from the mill at the age of 63.

Jerome leaves behind his wife, Valeda; children, Diane (Jerry) Darvell of Fort Frances, Ont., Adele (Garry) Henry of Thunder Bay, Ont., Gary (Kathy Pidlubny) of Calgary, Alta., Jeannette (Bill) Dann of Thunder Bay, Ont., Sharon (Hugh) Roche of Winnipeg, Man., Brian of Thunder Bay, Ont., Ernest (Janine) and Gerald (Michelle) of Fort Frances, Ont., Marlene (Steve) Gloster of Pembroke, Ont., Melody (Yvon) Audet of Thunder Bay, Ont., Adam Cousineau of Fort Frances, Ont., Patricia (Dean) McMahon of Fort Frances, Ont., and Michelle (John Mertson) Cousineau of Thunder Bay, Ont.; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
