It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Joseph Leonard Stanley Bates (Stan) announces his passing on Saturday, March 3, 2012.
He was born Aug. 14, 1931 in Lac-des-Seizes-Iles, Que. As a small boy, his family moved to Englehart, Ont.
As a young boy, Stan, his brothers, and father formed a band and played at dances and functions. He loved playing the fiddle and always found time to play a tune during family get-togethers.
At age 13, Stan left home to work in the bush camps and construction jobs with his father in eastern Ontario. This is where Stan developed his passion for running equipment. There wasn’t a machine he couldn’t run or was willing to try.
In 1950, he came to the Emo, Ont. area with Angus & Taylor Construction to build the highway from the Emo junction to Finland. It was there he met and married Marie Watts on May 10, 1951 and together they raised a family of five.
He continued to work in the area with this own truck and machinery, adding more equipment through the years and eventually building his own construction company where road building and cement work were his expertise.
He moved to Atikokan, Ont. in 1974 for the construction of the Pluswood Plant and decided then to make Atikokan their home.
Stan continued to work up until his passing. He took great pride in his ability to put in a good day’s work at his age.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Bates of 60 years (celebrated on May 10, 2011); sons, Robert and Brian (Kayla) of Atikokan, Ont., and George (Donna) of Finland, Ont.; and daughters, Shirley (Harold) McQuaker of Emo, Ont. and Carol (Dale) Thompson of Edson, Alta.
He also is survived by a sister, Edna (Phil) Foulem of Englehart, Ont.; grandchildren, Shane and Rachel, Dale and Barb, Wade and Sue, Steven and Kyla, Stacy and Ryan, and Melissa, Kyle, and Jordan; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Sidney and Pearl Bates; father- and mother-in-law, George and Bertha Watts; seven brothers, Oscar, Eric, Albert, Lawrence, Edward, Harvey, and Bruno; two sisters, Gertie and Rita; daughter-in-law, Catherine Bates; and brother- and sister-in-law, Bill and Beverly Watts; and nephew, Edward Watts.
As per Stan’s wishes, there will be no funeral. There will be a family service and interment at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, in memoriam donations may be made to the Atikokan General Hospital or the charity of your choice.
