It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved Pearl Jean Major, 85, of Manitou Rapids, on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 with her family by her side.
Pearl enjoyed the outdoors very much. She also enjoyed rice picking, making birch bark baskets, which she was known for by many, and playing cards and Bingo. Listening and attending pow-wows, trapping, and being with her grandchildren were things she enjoyed, as well.
She was predeceased by her parents, Jim and Jane Major; son, Terrence Grove; brothers, Harold, Tommy, and Jimmy Major; and her very special friend for many years, Jim James Leonard.
Pearl is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Major of Rainy River First Nations; Marilyn’s step-siblings, Annie, Rita, Josie, and Melvin Sandy of Winnipeg Man.; and good friend, Darlene Bob of Onigaming.
Also surviving are her granddaughters, Pamela Major (Steve Leonard) and Kelly Major (Norman Goodchild) of Rainy River First Nations; and great-grandchildren, Chase, Caleb, Ciara, Lezayah, Tameka, Malikye, and Isabella Pearl of Rainy River First Nations.
A traditional wake was held Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012 at the Rainy River First Nations gymnasium.
A traditional service was held Monday, Jan. 23, 2012, followed by a luncheon.
Interment took place in the Rainy River First Nations cemetery.
The pallbearers were Marcel Horton, Derek Horton, Robert Morrison, Ben Brown Jr., Wesley Debungee, and Gordon Kelly.
The honourary pallbearers were her family and close friends.
