Ethel Shrumm, 98, of Rainycrest Long Term Care in Fort Frances, Ont., passed away at her residence on Saturday, May 28, 2011.
Ethel was born on Sunday, March 9, 1913 in Whitehawk, Ont. to the late Johanna and Adam Elliott. She had lived most of her life in the Stratton area.
She lived with her son, Allan, on the farm after the passing of her husband, Beach, in 1984 until she broke her hip in 2010. She then moved to Fort Frances and resided at Rainycrest Long Term Care.
Ethel worked hard as a homemaker, as well as gardening and planting flowers. She enjoyed the outdoors and what nature had to offer.
Ethel experienced sorrow and grief for many years, but her strength and help of her family carried her through. She was a quiet, gentle person but firm in her beliefs as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend.
She will be truly missed by all that knew her.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Pat Cameron, Connie Williamson, and Elmer Shrumm; and her grandchildren, Dwight Williamson, Donnie (Shannon) Shrumm, Paul (Jen) Shrumm, Donna Grondines, Dianne Cameron, Carla Carmody, Maureen Inkster, Debbie Robb, and Della (Drew) Roddick.
Also left in sadness are numerous great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, Valerie Shrumm and Lavaun Shrumm; her sister, Lavina (Lovie); and many nieces and nephews.
Ethel was united in marriage on Sept. 30, 1929 to Beauchamp (Beach) Shrumm, who predeceased her in July, 1984.
She also was predeceased by her sons, Elwood, Melvin, Melburne, and Allan; six sisters, Betty, Bertha, Sophie, Clara, Arvilla, and Doris; and sons-in-law, Omer Williamson and Don Cameron.
At Ethel’s request, cremation has taken place.
A graveside service to celebrate her life was held Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Pineridge Cemetery in North Branch, Ont.
Rev. Barbara Miller officiated, followed by interment in the Pineridge Cemetery.
The honourary pallbearers were all of Ethel’s family and friends.
