It is with deep sadness that the family of James Cole announces his passing on Saturday, May 21, 2011, with family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jim was born in Thessalon, Ont. on Feb. 8, 1926 to the late Sam and Lillian Cole.
He was united in marriage to his life-long soulmate, Cecile Pope, on Dec. 23, 1950.
He is survived by his wife, Cecile; daughter, Patricia (Terry) Colip; sons, Sam (Kate), Michael, Bill (Cheryl), and John (Julie) Cole; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He served in the Royal Canadian Air force, became an aircraft engineer, and followed his dream of flying, working as a bush pilot in the Arctic, Labrador, Quebec, and Ontario for more than 20 years.
The family moved many times and had many adventures before settling in Nestor Falls, Ont. in 1969.
Later, Jim worked as a transport driver in Canada and the U.S. Upon retirement, Jim and Cecile spent eight happy winters in Florida.
During Jim’s last years, his love for fiddle music inspired him to assemble violins. He also purchased and restored a J3 Piper Cub, which provided great therapy during his last years. It gave Jim a great sense of pride to fly his Cub over Nestor Falls last summer.
Jim also was a member of the Nestor Falls United Church.
Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Jim’s life will take place Saturday, June 18, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Nestor Falls United Church in Nestor Falls, followed by lunch and shared memories in the lower hall.
The honourary pallbearers will be his children.
Should family and friends desire, in memoriam donations may be made to the Nestor Falls United Church or the Canadian Diabetes Association.
